What the International Menopause Society Recommendations Mean for Your Menopause Care

Menopause care continues to evolve as new evidence emerges. The International Menopause Society (IMS) publishes global recommendations to guide clinicians and support women through perimenopause and menopause using evidence-based, personalised care. Understanding these recommendations can help women make informed decisions about symptom management and long-term health.

What Are the IMS Recommendations?

The IMS recommendations are developed by international experts in women’s health and published through the society’s official guidance statements. They provide practical advice on managing menopause symptoms and reducing long-term health risks, including osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease [1].

Hormone Therapy Remains a Key Treatment Option

The IMS confirms that hormone therapy, also referred to as menopausal hormone therapy (MHT or HRT), is the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats. For healthy women under 60, or within ten years of menopause onset, the benefits generally outweigh the risks when therapy is appropriately prescribed [1].

Crucially, the IMS emphasises individual risk assessment rather than blanket rules.

Personalised Care Over One-Size-Fits-All

Menopause experiences vary widely. The IMS highlights the importance of tailoring care based on:

  • Symptom severity
  • Age and time since menopause
  • Personal and family medical history
  • Cardiovascular and breast cancer risk
  • Patient preferences

This approach supports shared decision-making between women and clinicians.

Non-Hormonal and Adjunctive Options

The IMS also recognises the role of non-hormonal treatments for women who cannot or do not wish to use hormone therapy. These may include certain antidepressants for vasomotor symptoms, cognitive behavioural therapy for mood and sleep, and lifestyle interventions.

Emerging treatments continue to be evaluated, reinforcing the need for specialist guidance.

Bone, Heart and Brain Health

Menopause is a key window for preventative healthcare. The IMS recommends proactive attention to bone density, cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic health and cognitive wellbeing. Early intervention can reduce the risk of fractures, heart disease and long-term disability.

Sexual and Urogenital Health

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause is common and under-recognised. The IMS recommends appropriate use of vaginal oestrogen, moisturisers and other treatments to improve comfort, sexual health and quality of life.

Why These Recommendations Matter

The IMS guidance empowers women to seek care that is evidence-based, balanced and personalised. It moves menopause care away from fear-based narratives and toward informed choice and proactive health management.
